Ruby black tea from Taiwan
Grown near the famous Sun-Moon Lake in Nantou, Taiwan, Ruby #18 is one of the most popular black teas in Taiwan. The TTES (Taiwan Tea Experimental Station) spent over 50 years perfecting the breeding program in order to release this cultivar in 2003. This is a unique cultivar which cultivated from an existing Taiwan native cultivar crossed with an Assam cultivar from Burma. Nowadays, Formosa black tea is mainly produced from the tea garden located at Puli of Nantou county, and Rui-sui of Hwa-lian county.
In Chinese, Formosa Black Tea is called Red Jade, or sometimes it is recognized as Ruby Tea. In the year of 2003, the TRES (Taiwan Research and Extension Station) celebrated its centennial anniversary and chose “Ruby” as a common name through vote. In Taiwan and China, Jade is one of the most sought after precious stones. In particular, the red jade is a very rare kind. It was given such a name in respect to its highly prized characteristics.
Taiwan Ruby tea is a broad leafy tea cultivar, with tea soup having natural cinnamonic fragrance and light peppermint flavor. Ruby is praised by black tea experts for its unique "Taiwan fragrance", belonging to a extremely special tea cultivar even in the multitudinous world well-known black tea.
