Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi)
- The Traditional Art of Charred Cedar
Shou Sugi Ban (or Yakisugi) is a traditional Japanese method of burning cedar (sugi=Japanese cypruss) technique that preserves wood by charring it.
Charring is a beautifully simple way of ensuring the longevity of wood. Normally used as exterior siding, the charred wood is pest and rot resistant for up to eighty years.
The process involves charring the wood, cooling it, cleaning it, and finishing it with a natural oil.
